For the next two days, Inlander staff writer Nicholas Deshais will be walking, biking and paddling the 63-mile perimeter of the city of Spokane. Follow his progress here on Bloglander.

DAY ONE, HOUR THREE: I come across my first roundabout at the intersection of Crestline and Lincoln. It’s a fairly quiet section of the perimeter, not far from a shuttered Kaiser plant. Just north of me, a large stretch of dusty trail and scrublands is quiet enough for Sean Fetters, who comes out here frequently to take walks. He’s a traveling nurse with Gentiva, and when he finds the time, he takes solace in the quieter parts of town. “I’m around this area daily,” Fetters says. “I come out here to give my brain a break.”

So far on my journey, this is the quietest — quieter than the Division, the Y, Target. Still, this peaceful corner, with its roundabout, brick-colored median and bike lanes, didn’t prepare me for the horse shit in the middle of the sidewalk.
