Gonzaga crosswalk gets flashy

Posted By on Thu, Sep 8, 2011 at 9:28 AM

Q: When does the official opening of flashing pedestrian signs merit an address from the mayor?

A: When it comes after an academic year at Gonzaga that saw four incidents of pedestrians being struck by cars.

In March, the Gonzaga Student Body Association passed out 500 pedestrian safety lights to the student body to avoid any future accidents.

But this is a more permanent remedy. Already, a pedestrian island has been installed at the crossing at Hamilton and Desmet. Lights at this crossing mean that all that pedestrians have to do is push a button, and a series of lights will illuminate the crosswalk, notifying motorists to stop.

The ceremony with the mayor starts at 12:15 pm. Look both ways before crossing to see it.
