CITY HALL EYEBALL: Talk medical pot at tonight's City Council meeting

Posted By on Mon, Apr 15, 2013 at 7:57 AM

Voice your thoughts on medical marijuana in Spokane at tonight's city council meeting (6 pm, 808 W. Spokane Falls Boulevard). In February, the Council passed a moratorium on new medical marijuana collectives in the city, worried the local medical market was growing too quickly as the state untangled rules for the future recreational market resulting from Initiative 502.

Council members said they wanted time to determine how they were going to regulate medical pot shops in the city because there are currently no zoning limitations on where collective gardens can be. (That runs counter to I-502's regulations on where recreational stores can be.)

Indeed, the crossover between the two markets has been hazy and many questions about how they'll coexist remain unanswered. State and local officials worry the lax regulations on medical marijuana will allow that market to undercut the recreational one, even for people who don't need medical cannabis.

The Council hasn't yet put any new zoning rules about marijuana collectives in place, and could extend the moratorium for another six months to do so.
