U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Ty Carter, a Spokane native who graduated from North Central High School, received the Medal of Honor at the White House today for actions in Afghanistan in October 2009. Carter is the fifth living person to receive the nation’s highest military honor for actions in Iraq or Afghanistan. A previous recipient, Clinton Romesha, was awarded the medal for the same battle at Combat Outpost Keating, a place that’s become one of the most well-known and documented symbols of the American war in Afghanistan.

“This is a historic day — the first time in nearly half a century, since the Vietnam War, that we’ve been able to present the Medal of Honor to two survivors of the same battle,” President Obama said at the ceremony.
