Movies coming out today
So your options aren't many, if you want to avoid what may be Ron Howard's worst movie ever (The Dilemma), but they're diverse. You have two live-action comic-book films (one a popular manga, the other The Green Hornet) and a film about equal rights for the ladies, starring the irrepressible Sally Hawkins. So, yeah, diverse.
THE DILEMMA
On the heels of Couples Retreat, Vince Vaughn shows some range and guts: The couples of The Dilemma aren't in a tropical paradise. Faced with the regrettable responsibility of telling his buddy and business partner, Kevin James, that Winona Ryder is doing the dirty behind James's back, Vaughn plays the other guy in the James-plus-one comedy formula as expected. Watch this on a double-date and feel the elbows tap your ribcage. (AM) Rated PG-13 | SHOWTIMES
GANTZ
In this live-action thriller, based on a best-selling Japanese comic, an anime series and then a video game, two recently deceased teenagers are forced to kill aliens in a gang of other dead assassins. Gantz is the mobster-like boss of the death squad, normally cloaked within a smooth, black sphere. Think Mortal Kombat music with lots of explosions and futuristic weaponry. Starring is Japanese boy band heartthrob Kazunari Ninomiya, who was also the lead in Clint Eastwood’s Letters From Iwo Jima. At Regal Northtown (CF) Unrated | SHOWTIMES
THE GREEN HORNET
Serious devotees of the Green Hornet — he of the dark, grim radio show of the 1930s — are going to howl. The rest of us can enjoy him here as an aggressively goofy spoof of the modern dark, grim vigilante drama. He doesn’t exactly kick ass — he is an ass. Screenwriter and star Seth Rogen, along with madcap French director Michel Gondry, infuses chaotic energy and more than a little meta-cunning into an unexpectedly amusing twist on the superhero. MADE IN DAGENHAM
Sally Hawkins is perfect as the charming, funny and quick-witted Rita O’Grady, who undergoes an unexpected transformation from hard-working wife to strike leader. This true story of the underdog fighting the Man (gender pun intended) is sure to be uplifting, if a bit formulaic. The culminating strike of 1968 will remind and maybe shock some of us that women were still fighting for basic equality less than fifty years ago. (CF) Rated R | SHOWTIMES
