“Just please God, not here, not now,” Coeur d’Alene Superintendent Hazel Bauman remembers thinking as the district received word that a mother was worried her suicidal son was at risk for “doing a Columbine.”

Five years ago, police arrested a young Brian Gilmore in the parking lot of Lake City High School. Gilmore had a loaded shotgun in the seat, and three rifles in the back. As the district discusses sweeping and expensive changes to its layout and security systems in the wake of the Newtown shootings, that moment is fresh on many minds.

To be clear, the police report clearly indicates that suicide, not massacre, was on Gilmore’s mind. But it’s a frightening read nevertheless. The full report follows.
