Citizen's Critique- Not Another Teen Movie

If you see my friend Hans, be sure to ask if he has taken anyone to see a good movie lately. Watch him cringe. We saw Not Another Teen Movie Saturday night. In the 82 minutes of torturous acting and horrible story, I laughed twice. Once because something funny happened in the movie. Once because the movie reached such a low point that it was time to either laugh or cry.

In the first instance, the funny thing would not have garnered a laugh in a better movie, but among the endless minutes of Not Funny at All, that one moment shone like a gem. The movie is overcome with references to other movies. This could serve as a source of comedy, but it actually makes the movie worse. For instance, why try to spoof the one scene in The Breakfast Club that just shows how cruel a teacher can be? Or concentrate on how pathetic Ducky from Pretty in Pink actually is?

Whoever wrote Not Another Teen Movie lacks the sense of comedy and tragedy that makes a good satire penetrating. There is nothing penetrating about this movie -- not even the tasteless opening sequence involving a vibrator. This movie should not be seen. Don't wait until it hits video to shun it. Shun it now.
