Two former Spokanites named to Time's "100 Most Influential" list

In its annual list of "The 100 Most Influential People in the World," Time magazine includes features on Lady Gaga, General Stanley McChrystal, Michael Pollan and two former Spokanites — Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik, the brains behind the wildly popular Web comic strip Penny Arcade. The former Mead High students also founded Child's Play, a charity that sends videogames to sick kids in more than 60 hospitals around the world.

Says Time:

"Krahulik and Holkins have become the tastemakers, and conscience, of an industry the size of Hollywood. But for all their success, they are almost compulsively self-deprecating, and they give all the credit to their fans. You can't put a label on them. Label smacks of hype, and Penny Arcade doesn't do hype. "We don't think about it," Holkins says. "We specifically don't try to figure out what we are." Krahulik adds, deadpan: "Except rad."
