Local peace group protests state execution tonight

The Peace and Justice Action League of Spokane is holding a demonstration tonight protesting the execution of Cal Brown, the first execution in Washington state since 2001.

According to a statement, PJALS believes "the death penalty as an unjust, unfair, and irrational punishment that does not deter crime and costs more to administer than incarceration for life."

"The death penalty makes killers of us all. We don’t want this execution committed in our name," PJALS director Liz Moore said in the release. "We’re calling on Governor Gregoire to commute Cal Brown’s sentence to life in prison."

The demonstration will begin with a multi-denominational service at the Salem Lutheran Church, 1428 W. Broadway Ave., at 7:30 pm. At 9 pm, the group will move down to the county courthouse for a candlelight vigil. The demonstration will continue until sometime after midnight, when Brown's execution is confirmed.
