See the new Pend Oreille shoreline trail tomorrow

Posted on Wed, Sep 22, 2010 at 1:29 PM

Thursday afternoon is the first of two opportunities to walk a proposed lakeshore trail along Pend Oreille Bay that connects Sandpoint’s City Beach with Ponder Point just to the north in the city of Kootenai.

The trail would run in a wide arc at the very northwest corner of Lake Pend Oreille, running through parts of Sandpoint, Ponderay and Kootenai. Some of the two-mile trail runs atop an inadvertent roadway created by Corps of Engineers bank stabilization work in years past.

Most of the proposed route crosses private property, including the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway, which runs a well-trafficked main line through the corridor. But property owners, including descendants of landscape photographer Ross Hall, have worked with a variety of different groups to pull the proposal together.

The proposal has advanced to an unveiling of the final concept plan with a slideshow and updates tomorrow evening from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at Sandpoint’s Edgewater Motel. A walk along the trail precedes the event, starting at 3 pm.

A second walk and shoreline cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 25, from 10 am to 1 pm. Both walks begin at the north end of Sandpoint City Beach. Contact Susan Drumheller of the Idaho Conservation League for more info. 208-265-9565.
