The Big Read enters the home stretch
Discuss Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried tonight from 6:30-8 pm at 3324 S. Perry St., or Tuesday afternoon from 1-2:30 pm at the Hillyard Senior Center, 4001 N. Cook St.
Watch Mel Gibson and Greg Kinnear in a movie about the first Vietnam War battle involving Americans, We Were Soldiers, at the Downtown Library on Wed, April 13, from 5:30-7:30 pm.
The works of several authors appearing at Get Lit are pertinent to "Telling the American Story" — look in particular for Louise Borden, Kelly Milner Halls, Julie Otsuka and Suzanne Morgan Williams.
One particular event to note: Jack Hamann's "Speaking Truth to Power" on Sat, April 16, from 3:30-4:30 pm at EWU's Riverpoint Campus. It's about the unjust prosecution during World War II of several black U.S. soldiers stationed here in Washington state -- only to be reversed decades later when new evidence surfaced. The culminating event of both the Big Read and Get Lit, of course, is Tim O'Brien's appearance at the Bing on Sat, April 16, at 8 pm, with an oral-history film about local veterans and the poetry of Brian Turner as opening acts.
And there's a final book discussion at the Deer Park Library on Sun, April 24, from noon-1:30 pm
