Hate Crimes: The Meaning of Matthew

Thirteen years ago, 21-year-old University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard was brutally beaten, tortured, and left to die in an anti-gay hate crime. His murder sparked a national dialogue about anti-GLBTQ hate crimes.

In 2009, the United States Congress passed the Matthew Shepard Act, and President Barack Obama signed the legislation into law.

Determined to keep others from suffering his fate, his parents established the Matthew Shepard Foundation to advocate for GLBTQ rights. Judy Shepard, who travels the country telling her, will present “The Meaning of Matthew,” today at 7 pm in Cowles Auditorium at Whitworth University. Admission is free. Call 777-4263.
