As work continues on Veterans Court near the Monroe Street bridge, new signs are being installed on that stretch of the Centennial Trail warning cyclists to walk their bikes.

If you've ridden or walked the S-curve in that area, you know the grade can increase bike speeds with less than perfect visibility, and that combination has proven dangerous. We wrote this summer about a young man killed when, while riding his bike in the area, he slammed into one of the cement bridge pylons. His friend, who had been cycling just ahead of him, called on the city to add new safety measures to the area.

At the time, the Parks Department was considering either signage or bollards — posts that slow bike traffic and prevent larger vehicle access. We've reached out to Parks Department Director Leroy Eadie to find out more about the choice to post these signs, and we'll update this post if we hear back.
