Welcome to August, a month we greeted with appropriately scorching temperatures, and we'll depart with thoughts of school and fall dominating. But let's not think about that now. Instead, there's plenty of summer fun to be had, and you can find it in our event listings and staff picks. 

Here are some highlights for the week ahead: 

Monday, Aug. 3

LIVE BANDS | Michael Franti and Spearhead bring endless good vibes and a sound blending hip-hop, reggae and rock to the Knitting Factory tonight. Read our interview with the man, and here's a sample of his sound: 

LIVE BANDS | The Big Dipper plays host to the hard-rocking Texas Hippie Coalition along with Red Sky Mary and Marry the Mistress; Baby Bar has Sarah Bethe Nelson with Hannah Reader and Loomer, and The Pin! has Visitors headlining a fat bill. In other words, Monday is full of tunes all over town. 

FOOD & DRINK | Ever thought of pickling your own veggies? Of course you have. Head to the South Hill Library for a free class tonight at 6 pm. 

Tuesday, Aug. 4

FILM | The Garland Theater's Summer Camp film series offers up a classic this week with Caddyshack. 

SPORTS & OUTDOORS | The NWL-PBL All-Star Game is going down at Avista Stadium, with a Fan Fair starting at 4 pm

LIVE BANDS | Jones Radiator has a great lineup for midweek, including headliners White Mystery, who you might remember from Volume, as well as Siamese Suicide and 66Beat, who you might also remember from Volume. Here's a sample of the garage-rock stylings of White Mystery:  

Wednesday, Aug. 5

LIVE BANDS | If you love the fuzzed-out garage rock, you should definitely look into the Heaters show at Neato Burrito, where they'll be joined by Bigfoot Wallace & His Wicked Son. 

COMMUNITY | It's the Kendall Yards Night Market right outside the front door of Inlander Central, and we love having access to all that great produce from area growers. This week, Scott Ryan provides the tunes at 7 pm. 

Thursday, Aug. 6

THEATER | Lovable ogre Shrek isn't just an animated star, he's now a live attraction who can be scene at Coeur d'Alene's Kroc Center in Shrek The Musical, starting Thursday. 

LIVE BANDS | The Festival at Sandpoint kicks off with Arlo Guthrie and Jonatha Brooke. Read about the man behind the sounds right here. 

Friday, Aug. 7

VISUAL ARTS | Ric Gendron introduces his new works at a show at Manic Moon & More, part of First Friday for August. 

FESTIVAL | The Hillyard Festival celebrates all things Hillyard with food, music, games and more. It starts Friday and continues through Sunday. 

WORDS | Author Sharma Shields is the guest host of this month's 3-Minute Mic at Auntie's. 

Saturday, Aug. 8

THEATER | The Bing has a creepy, crawly bit of musical comedy Saturday and Sunday as CCT Presents: The Addams Family. 

FESTIVAL | The Garland Street Fair features a bunch of live music, a car show and more. 

FESTIVAL | Gleason Fest takes over a chunk of downtown for a day full of live tunes and good times, with money raised going to the Gleason Initiative Foundation.
