Brilliant baritone
Spokane is the place where world-renowned baritone vocalist Thomas Hampson became, well, Thomas Hampson. In fact, the very moment might have been when he sat as a young lad in the balcony of the Fox Theater, holding hands with a girl and listening to a Mozart symphony. See him where it all began this Saturday and Sunday.

  • Cates: Digging up Beggs' work as an attorney in the '90s ahead of next Tuesday's election.

Less than a week before Election Day, local Republicans, including Spokane County GOP Chairwoman Stephanie Cates, are peddling details of City Councilman Breean Beggs' involvement in a 22-year-old First Amendment case. Beggs defended a Bellingham bookstore's right to sell a particular magazine that included graphic depictions of rape and torture. Beggs and other attorneys were successful in their argument that the magazine was satire, not porn.

The prosecutor was fined $1.3 million for pursuing the case. Now, local conservatives are accusing Beggs of defending rape culture. (Spokesman-Review, New York Times)

Worst roommate ever
An 18-year-old student at the University of Hartford in Connecticut has been expelled and is currently facing criminal charges for contaminating her roommate's personal items and posting about it on social media. Brianna Brochu posted this paragraph to her Instagram account:

"After one and a half months spitting in her coconut oil, putting moldy clam dip in her lotions, rubbing used tampons on her backpack, putting her toothbrush places where the sun doesn't shine, and so much more, I can finally say goodbye to Jamaican Barbie."

The roommate/victim, Chennel Rowe, posted this video to her Facebook page when she found out. Brochu is white. Rowe is black. (New York Times)
