What would you have done with the license plate #, report it to the police?
I think they have their hands full with enough real criminals to keep them
busy without spending time tracking somebody who hit a cat and didn't stop.
Granted, I wasn't there but I'm betting the guy didn't intentionally steer
his car towards the animal. Sometimes cats just dart out into traffic and
it is too late to stop; doesn't make it right but people who own outdoor
cats should be aware of the possibility. I am a true animal lover but I
also have a healthy fear of approaching any injured animal that will
instinctively protect itself by biting and clawing my hands/arms/etc. to
shreds. I hit a cat years ago, at night, like this guy did, but I didn't
have a blanket or a towel and I had to leave the animal. What was I going
to do? Knock on doors, in the dark, trying to find the owner? These cats
roam far and wide, I wouldn't have any idea where to start or stop. And if
I had been able to get it into my car, then what? The only option is the
animal emergency clinic on the other side of town at that time of night. In
a perfect world (fantasy) the driver would pay the vet bills and hang
fliers all over the neighborhood; in a not-so-perfect world (real) world,
he'll occasionally be haunted by the thought of that cat for years to come,
just like me. Does that make you feel better?
