Jake Browning threw for 292 yards and 3 touchdowns as Washington beat Washington State 45-17 in the 109th annual Apple Cup, played in Pullman. Washington came out quick, scoring 4 touchdowns in the 1st quarter to put themselves up 28-3.
Washington State Quarterback Luke Falk struggled throwing for 269 yards and one touchdown, but three interceptions. In his final home game, Washington State receiver Gabe Marks caught 11 passes for 111 yards and also 1 touchdown. But, Washington State's offense was only able to rush for 65 yards compared to 168 yards for Washington.
Down 35-17 towards the end of the 3rd quarter, Washington State (8-4 overall, 7-2 Pac-12) marched down the field but faced a 4th down at the Washington 1 yard line. Running back Gerard Wicks was unable to punch through for a touchdown which resulted in a turnover on downs. Washington (11-1 overall, 8-1 Pac-12) then scored a field goal and another touchdown to seal the game.
Washington State next waits to see what bowl game they will play in. Washington will play in the Pac-12 championship game on Friday, December 2 at 6PM in Santa Clara, CA, playing either Colorado or USC. A win in the Pac-12 championship games keeps alive their hopes of playing in the College Football Playoff semifinals on New Year's Eve.
