Occupy Spokane permitted for park occupation

The Spokane Parks and Recreation Department has granted a permit for Occupy Spokane to camp in Franklin Park.

Earlier this week, the group announced its plans to move to the Division Street park from the downtown median it has been occupying since September.

Parks director Leroy Eadie says the permit allows camping in the park until Monday. The permit was granted today and will allow the occupiers one additional three-day extension.

A permit such as this is basically unheard of, Eadie says.

"This is the first time we've had a transient shelter permit" in his two years with the department, Eadie says.

He says the protesters have not told him how long they plan to stay in the park, but overstaying the permit would be a misdemeanor. Protesters have not said when they plan to end their occupation of public space.
