Everything you want to know about the 57,000 Washington residents who enrolled in health insurance last month
This morning, Washington's health insurance exchange released a comprehensive report with detailed statistics on approximately 57,000 residents who enrolled in health coverage from Oct. 1 to Oct. 31.
Here's what the data shows:
Almost 90 percent of all Washington Healthplanfinder consumers enrolled in Medicaid: In October, 57,730 people enrolled in health care plans through the exchange. 51,379 enrolled in Medicaid.
More than 75 percent of qualified health plan enrollees qualified for tax credits: In the same month, 6,351 people purchased private health insurance plans through the exchange. Of those, 4,835 qualified for tax credits to help cover the costs of their monthly premiums.
More than 20,000 people haven't paid for their insurance plans yet: So far, there are 93,807 applications "in process" from individuals who haven't finalized their applications or paid for their plans. Of those, 21,671 people have completed applications for private health insurance plans, but haven't submitted their first payment, due on Dec. 23 for coverage beginning on Jan. 1.
King, Snohomish, Pierce and Spokane counties had the highest enrollment figures: 14,499 people in King County; 6,306 people in Pierce County; 5,900 in Spokane County and 4,995 people in Snohomish County enrolled in health insurance through the exchange.
Skamania, Wahkiakum, Ferry, Columbia and Garfield counties had the lowest enrollment figures: 70 people, 66 people, 52 people, 43 people, and 13 people, respectively.
The majority people who enrolled in Medicaid are younger than 35: Just under 26 percent of new Medicaid enrollees are younger than 18. About 11 percent are 18 to 25 years old, and roughly 19 percent are 26 to 34 years old.
Conversely, the majority of people who purchased private insurance plans are 35 and older: About 37 percent of enrollees who purchased qualified health plans through the exchange are 55 to 64 year old. Roughly 40 percent are ages 35 to 54.
The "silver" plans are the most popular: 4,038 people, nearly 64 percent of enrollees in private insurance options, chose second-tier "silver" level plans, which cover 70 percent of the cost of essential health benefits.
