One Binster, born and raised in Los Angeles, never saw that electrifying moment in sports history because his wife thought it would be nice to go out to dinner -- a dinner now forgotten, a dinner that could have been eaten any other night of the week. Not that he has any unresolved anger about the matter. Not now. That was 20 years ago.





Rach On


The rousing finish to Rachmaninoff's Second Symphony as performed by the Spokane Symphony last weekend was so good -- and Chip Phillips' third-movement clarinet solo was so tender -- that we just wanted to rush up onstage afterwards and jump up and down and tousle Eckart's hair and hug everybody in sight. We didn't do it -- in the circumstances, dignity and restraint were expected -- but we wanted to.

Consume Conspicuously


At Consumatron.com ("Everything We Buy, Reviewed"), a couple of Chicago blokes file short reviews of laundry detergent, barbecues, crew socks, sourdough bread, just everyday stuff. But what caught our eye was their favorable review of Margaret Atwood's new book, a cultural history of borrowing and lending called Payback. Good thing our economy has never relied on people spending money that they don't really have. When Bush said "Go shopping" sometime after 9/11, maybe he really meant seven years later.
