Opening Films

AMC Classic Film Festival -- It's the last week of AMC's homage to the greatest films of all time. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989, Rated PG-13) may not have been our fave Indy joint, but to some it's the only one that will do. It's up Friday night. On Saturday, enjoy some fava beans and a nice chianti, and then come on down for a showing of 1991's Silence of the Lambs (Rated R). Finally, Sunday is reserved for none other than 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968, Rated: G)





* Beyond Borders -- Pouty Angelina Jolie spends all of her money on food for unfortunates in Ethiopia after being dazzled by a do-gooder doctor (Clive Owen) who demands funding from the wealthy. He follows trouble -- with the intent of eradicating it -- to all sorts of bad parts of the world, and she starts following him. This is supposed to be a moving and romantic story of people saving people. But Jolie's empty acting and the storyline's absurdity make for one bad movie. If you really want to see it, you'd better do it quickly. (ES) Rated: R





Radio -- South Carolina high school football coach Ed Harris befriends developmentally disabled Cuba Gooding Jr. in this "yoohoo, Oscar, over here" drama. Radio is inspired by a Sports Illustrated article on the two principal characters and their enduring, real-life friendship. Rated: PG





Scary Movie 3 -- The Scary Movie franchise gets a little help this time out from deadpan actor Leslie Nielsen, writer Kevin Smith and Airplane! director David Zucker. Look for spoofs of The Ring, The Others, The Matrix, Signs and even 8 Mile. Rated: PG-13





* Wonderland -- Busy, repellent, showboaty and just not much fun at all, Wonderland tells the story of notorious porn performer John Holmes (Val Kilmer, as amped up as a monkey on a monkey's back) and the investigation of the notorious "Wonderland" murders he was implicated in after his porn career ended, during his slow death by drugs but before his accelerated death from AIDS complications. Laboriously derivative of Boogie Nights, director James Cox's movie is one that revels in the scene of the grime with little illumination beyond young actors flouting their previously squeaky reps. Lisa Kudrow, as Holmes' ex-wife, has an affronted dignity; Eric Bogosian is camp itself as a snaky gangster. (RP) Rated: R
