The games have begun. The final production of the season (a guest show by Woodland Theatre Productions) at Spokane’s Stage Left is The Gin Game, a two-act play showcasing two well-known local cast members: Ed Bryan and Kathie Doyle-Lipe. This Pulitzer Prize-winning play by D.L. Coburn centers around Weller and Fonsia, two elderly residents at a nursing home. Without other friends in this dull setting, the pair immediately strike up conversation and begin to enjoy each others’ company. Then Weller offers to teach Fonsia the game of gin rummy. Though a beginner, she wins consistently. Battles between the two spark when a each player tries to expose the other’s weakness through humiliation and belittling.
